On November 15 and 16, JSPS and UCLA cosponsored the symposium, “Harnessing Physical Forces for Medical Applications” in cooperation with Kyoto University, the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI), the David Geffen School of Medicine, and the Office of Interdisciplinary & Cross Campus Affairs (ICCA).

The symposium brought researchers from both Japan and the U.S. to present their research and promote academic exchanges between the two countries. During the two day symposium participants discussed the convergence of physical sciences, nanomaterials, the nanobio interface and biomedical sciences. Dr. Fuyuhiko Tamanoi (UCLA/Kyoto University), the organizing chair, said the purpose of this symposium was to bring together scientists from diverse fields to discuss critical issues and translational potential while furthering cross pollination between disciplines.

The symposium covered some of the following topics:

• Physical forces: beams, particles, light, magnetic field, and sound.
• Physical forces and cancer therapy: boron neutron capture therapy, and monochromatic X-ray radiation.
• Imaging: MRI, PET, single molecule imaging, and cryoEM.
• Nanomaterials: Stimuli-responsive nanomaterials.
• How Physical force is used in biology: contractile nanotube system, and cell surface and membrane.
• How cells and organs interface with nanomaterials.
• New industry and commercial development: innovation, and medical instrumentation.

Throughout the two day event presenters took a variety of comments and questions. Hopefully the experience will provide researchers with food for thought and help inspire the future development of their research field going forward. JSPS will continue to support such academic symposia that helps strengthen international cooperative networks.

Since its establishment in 2003, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science’s San Francisco Office (JSPS SF: http://www.jspsusa-sf.org/index.php) has been supporting exchange between the Japanese and American researcher communities while acting as a hub for Japanese universities’ West Coast offices and their networking activities. This 15th anniversary event is to highlight the achievements of the international research centers established by the World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI). These globally visible research centers focus on a wide range of fields such as energy, chemistry, plant biology and astrophysics. This 15th anniversary event goes for two days. The program will be followed by networking receptions at the end of each day.

当センターでは、毎年、米国において活躍されている日本人研究者の方々の分野を越えた交流を促進し、必要な情報を得たり、友好を深めたりすることを通じて、研究活動を一層充実させていただくことを目的に、交流会を開催しております。

この度、下記の日程で、当センター主催「日本人研究者交流会　2018年度冬」を開催いたします。小児心臓外科医として第一線でご活躍の佐野俊二氏（UCサンフランシスコ校教授）の基調講演及び懇親会等の実施を予定しております。

本研究会は、米国に滞在する大学等職員のネットワーク形成支援、及び大学の国際化の進展に伴って職員に求められる能力向上の機会を提供することを目的としています。当日は、研修等にて米国滞在中の大学職員等計17名が参加しました。

講演会講師には、青島　宏一郎氏(サンフランシスコ州立大学 Assistant Director, International Student Services & Outreach, Office of International Programs)をお招きし、米国でのこれまでのご経験から、現在勤務されているサンフランシスコ州立大学での業務内容まで幅広くお話をいただきました。サンフランシスコ州立大学の事例紹介では、交換留学（短期～正規留学）・リクルートマーケティングについて、また職員の雇用形態に至るまで幅広く情報共有があり、参加者が米国大学での職員の業務について深く理解することができました。

また、業務内容だけでなく留学生アドバイザーにとって必要なスキルや、大学職員として学生たちとどのように向かい合うかという心構えについてもお話いただき、参加者が各自の業務に対する思いを振り返る機会となりました。

講演会後のグループワークでは、参加者各自の米国での研修経験の中で得た、具体的な気づきを基に日米の大学比較を行い、活発な議論が行われました。

JSPSサンフランシスコ研究連絡センターでは、今後も定期的に在米大学職員研究会を開催する予定です。

JSPSサンフランシスコ研究連絡センターでは、「在米大学職員研究会」を下記の日程で開催することになりましたので、ご案内させていただきます。

 

この会は、研修等で米国大学に派遣されている大学職員の皆様のスタッフデベロップメント（SD）の一環として、2009年から毎年度開催している研修プログラムです。当研究連絡センターが所在するカリフォルニア州は、州のマスタープランに基づき、UC（カリフォルニア大学）、CSU（カリフォルニア州立大学）、CCC（コミュニティカレッジ）という３層にわたる公立高等教育を提供し、その３層をスタンフォード大学を始めとする私立大学が取り巻くという特徴的な高等教育制度で、世界的にも高い研究成果を挙げています。そのような背景を踏まえ、当研究連絡センターは、「Academia Oriented」な活動を幅広く展開しており、「在米大学職員研究会」は大学の国際化を目指した大学職員のSDとして実施しています。

研修等で米国の大学に滞在する大学職員であれば、国公私の別、米国や日本の大学の所属部署、職位、米国滞在期間等に関わらずどなたでも参加可能です。奮ってご参加いただきますようよろしくお願い申し上げます。

○会の趣旨と内容

本研修は、米国滞在職員の意識向上や動機付け、日本に帰国後のモチベーション向上等につなげていくことを目的としています。今回の研修では、サンフランシスコ州立大学の青島宏一郎氏を講師にお迎えします。青島氏はサンフランシスコ州立大学の国際交流部で、世界各国からの留学生の受け入れ、相談、リクルートなど、留学生サポート全般に長年携わられており、これまでのご経験や米国大学職員の働き方に関するご知見等を共有いただく予定です。また、日米の大学の教職員の意識の違い等といったテーマも含め幅広く議論を行うことで、参加者の皆様に今後の米国での研修期間を有意義に過ごすためのヒントを得ていただきたいと考えています。

JSPSサンフランシスコ研究連絡センターでは、8月18日に日本人研究者交流会2018年度夏を開催しました。

 

本交流会は、米国において活躍されている日本人研究者の方々の分野を越えた交流を促進し、必要な情報を得たり友好を深めていくことを通じて、研究活動をより一層充実させていくことを目的に、年に2回開催しております。交流会には米国でPIとして活躍されている研究者、客員研究員、大学教職員、ポスドク、大学院学生、企業研究者など総勢68名の方にご参加いただきました。

研究紹介では現在米国の機関で研究に従事している４名の若手研究者から発表がありました。また、カリフォルニア大学バークレー校の平貴昭先生をお招きし：「サンフランシスコ・ベイエリアでの研究生活とバークレー地震研究所における地震防災・減災の取り組み」をテーマにお話をいただきました。

 

その後のグループセッションでは、参加者の皆様が10グループに分かれ、米国の研究環境等について幅広く議論いただきました。本交流会は研究分野を超えた意見交換、交流、ネットワークづくりの場として活用され、大変有意義な会となりました。

 

次回のJSPS日本人研究者交流会（2018年度冬）は2019年2月2日にベイエリアで開催予定です。

JSPS and JFIT held a symposium “AI and the Future of Society: A Global Approach to Understanding the Digital Disruption” on April 27 and 28 in cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition, the German Institute for Japan Studies and several other organizations.

 

The conference brought together scholars from Japan, the U.S. and Germany, to explore the “state of the art” of social science thinking about the ongoing technological disruption, innovation, and national policy responses in different countries. The Conference was open to many different lines of inquiry, including:

 

• What are the new complexities of the men-machine relationship, ongoing societal challenges, and new issues such as job replacement or ethical priority rankings of self-driven cars or automated surgeons?
• How are large companies responding to the disruption: what are new business models, corporate strategies, or operations management and human resource practices?
• How should we think about new regulatory structures and global agreements, e.g. on privacy and cybersecurity, in the health sciences, or for robots and drones?
• What are the legal, ethical and societal challenges associated with the fast pace of technological change?
• What is the impact of these developments on innovation and entrepreneurship, including government policies and market responses such as newly emerging corporate innovation strategies?

 

The conference had a high degree of interdisciplinary exchange. We are pleased to see this event serve as the inaugural conference of a new research initiative on digitization and the future of society from a global perspective. JSPS will continue to support such academic symposia that helps strengthen international cooperative networks.

From May 29-30, JSPS San Francisco staff joined the NAFSA 2018 Annual Conference & Expo, “Diverse Voices, Shared Commitment”, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The annual NAFSA conference is a large-scale event focused on international education. Nearly one million educators and other stakeholders from over 3,500 institutions all over the world attend the event. Participants learn about the latest trends in international education at numerous sessions and seminars. In addition, NAFSA offers a great networking opportunity for universities seeking institutional partnerships. Our staff participated in various seminars and sessions about inNAFSA 2018 Annual Meeting JSPSWO-SFternational education.

The Call for Nominations of 2018 (34th) International Prize for Biology was opened.

The International Prize for Biology is a commemorative prize to celebrate the sixty-year reign of Emperor Showa and his longtime devotion to biological research. It also pays tribute to the present Emperor, His Majesty, Emperor Akihito, who has striven for many years to advance the study of gobioid fish taxonomy while contributing continuously to the developing of this Prize.

Based on nominations gathered from around the world, the Prize is awarded annually to a researcher who has made an outstanding contribution to make advance in biological sciences.

The research field of this year’s Prize is “Paleontology.” In this regard, I would like to invite you to nominate a recipient for the 2018 Prize. JSPS San Francisco recently held fellowship information and networking sessions at UC San Diego. With the generous help of the Office of Research Affairs, especially from Director Miwako Waga, participants came to learn about the JSPS’s fully-funded fellowships for research in Japan and to connect with fellow researchers.

The sessions drew researchers from different career stages, including late-term doctoral students, postdocs and faculty members.

The JSPS would like to thank Miroslav Krstic (Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Research) for giving some opening remarks and JSPS alumni Stuart Anstis (Emeritus Professor, Department of Psychology) for sharing his experience researching in Japan on a JSPS Fellowship. Their talks were the highlight of the session, providing valuable insight through their first-hand experiences.

The JSPS also thanks guests from Japanese University Network in the Bay Area (JUNBA), Kazuhiko Hasegawa (Regional Director, Osaka University North American Center for Academic Initiatives) for his participation in the short networking event following the session. He shared viewpoints about the state of research in Japan and his experience of accepting overseas researchers.

JSPS San Francisco will continue to hold regular networking info sessions at universities around the Bay Area. All interested researchers are welcome to attend.
