JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (Short-term)
for North American and European Researchers 2005-2006

The JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (Short-term) for North American and European Researchers provides opportunities to young pre- and postdoctoral researchers from two regions to conduct, under the guidance of their hosts, cooperative research with leading research groups in universities and other Japanese institutions. The program aims to help such researchers to advance their own research while augmenting opportunities for them to come to Japan, thus expanding scientific exchange between Japan and the following participating countries: the US, Canada, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxemburg, Holland, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK.
The newly established JSPS San Francisco Office is in charge of nominating candidates living in the US, Canada and Mexico for that program.

  1. FIELDS OF RESEARCH:
    All fields of the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences are included under this program.

  2. ELIGIBILITY:
    Each candidate for the Fellowship must:
    1. Possess either the nationality, permanent resident or citizenship of the above participating countries, and live in the US, Canada and Mexico.
    2. Hold a doctorate degree when the Fellowship goes into effect, which must have been received within ten years prior to April 2, 2005; or be enrolled in a doctoral course and be scheduled to receive a Ph.D. within two years.
    3. Have arranged in advance a research plan with his/her Japanese host.
      Note: Those who have previously been awarded a fellowship of 12 months or longer under the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship Program or the STA Fellowship Program are not eligible.
  3. PERIOD:
    From 15 days to 11 months
  4. STARTING DATE:
    Fellows must start their Fellowship in Japan during FY2005 (1 April 2005 - 31 March 2006)

  5. TERMS OF AWARD (FELLOWS ONLY):
    1. A round-trip air ticket (based on JSPS regulations)
    2. A monthly maintenance allowance of 392,000 yen
    3. A settling-in allowance of 200,000 yen (only for Fellows with a tenure of more than three months)
    4. A domestic research travel allowance of 58,500 yen
    5. A monthly research support allowance of 81,000 yen
    6. Overseas travel accident and sickness insurance coverage
      Note:
      1. The amounts of the Awards indicated above are subject to change.
      2. If the Fellow resides in Japan on the date his/her award letter is issued, the above-mentioned air ticket to Japan and settling-in allowance will not be provided.
  6. HOST RESEARCHERS AND HOST INSTITUTIONS IN JAPAN:
    Host researchers in Japan must be employed full-time (excluding research assistants) at an institution of one of the types listed below:
    1. Universities

    2. Inter-university research institutes

    3. Research institutes or scientific research corporations under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).
    4. Other research institutes and scientific research corporations listed in Table 1
    Candidates must have arranged in advance a research plan for their stay in Japan with their prospective host researcher.
  7. APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR THE PROGRAM:
    Applications for this program must be submitted to JSPS through the JSPS San Francisco Office. Application process is as follows:
    1. Contact is made between the candidate who wishes to conduct cooperative research in Japan and his/her prospective host.
    2. The candidate submits an application to the JSPS San Francisco Office
    3. JSPS San Francisco Office selects the candidates and nominates them to JSPS Tokyo.
    * JSPS does not find or introduce host scientists.
    ** Apart from receiving applications through the JSPS San Francisco Office, JSPS Tokyo also accepts applications from foreign nominating authorities and Japanese researchers who agree to host a foreign researcher.
  8. MATERIALS TO BE SUBMITTED:
    1. Application form (research data) written by each candidate (FORM)
    2. .
    3. A letter of acceptance/invitation from the candidate's prospective host researcher in Japan, stating that he/she accepts the candidate at his /her institution. An informal e-mail with all the necessary information is permissible.
    4. A copy of the candidate's doctoral degree certificate (if applicable).
    5. Supplementary documents (if necessary).
    * All documents except the degree certificate must be original.
    ** All documents must be in either English or Japanese. When the original document is in another language, please be sure to attach an English translation (which does not to need be an official translation, but may be done by the host or candidate).

  9. REPORTING OBLIGATION:
    The fellowship awardees and their host researchers must submit a research report within one month of the completion of his/her tenure.
    * The names of the awardees and their host researchers as well as their research themes and reports are subject to public disclosure.

Note: EXCEPTIONS
There may be some exceptions to the above eligibility or procedure requirements. Please contact the JSPS San Francisco Office if you feel your situation pertains to this.
