ABOUT US
The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) established the San Francisco Office as their 9th overseas office in Berkeley, California in 2003.
JSPS is an independent administrative institution under the jurisdiction of Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). Originally founded as a non-profit foundation in 1932 through an endowment by Emperor Showa, JSPS has functioned for over 70 years as Japan's central implementing body of programs to promote science in all fields, including humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, and medicine.
OUR MISSION
One of JSPS's main areas of emphasis is the promotion of international scientific cooperation. In the United States, JSPS has a Washington Office; and with a number of counterpart institutions, it carries out an array of bilateral programs including researcher exchange. We, the San Francisco Office will promote cooperation with academic communities on the West Coast of America, and will assume the following missions:
- To communicate with academic institutions with regard to the implementation of JSPS programs.
- To disseminate and gather information and materials needed in promoting scientific cooperative activities in the US, Canada and, Japan.
- To provide information and assistance to US researchers interested in applying for JSPS fellowships, and to offer follow-up service to US researchers who have completed JSPS programs.
- To provide logistics assistance to Japanese researchers visiting the US in pursuit of their research work.
In order to embody these missions, we mainly carry out the following activities:
- Create Networks with American Universities and Researchers
Visit American universities and promote JSPS organizations and activities through meetings, workshops etc. (Promote invitation programs for foreign researchers, invite universities to hold joint Colloquiums)
UC(Berkeley, Davis, Irvine etc.), Stanford University, University of Texas at Austin, Harvard University, MIT, Princeton University, Yale University, British Columbia University(Canada) etc.
- Hold Academic Symposiums
Hold joint colloquiums with American Universities. Provide opportunities for the presentation of Japanese high-quality research accomplishments/Promote academic exchange between America and Japan
Past Co-organizers: UC Berkeley, University of Texas Austin, University of British Columbia - Support Japanese Universities' Activities in the US
Support for holding symposiums in the bay area, attend visiting students, support the arrangement of visitors conducting surveys and support Japanese University Network in the Bay Area(JUNBA) activities as a secretariat - Create Networks among Japanese Researchers in the US
Hold several events a year such as "Gathering of JSPS Japanese Fellows", "Young JSPS Fellow Forum"; Aiming at leading to future collaboration, provide opportunities to exchange opinions, build networks for young Japanese researchers working in the US - Promote Felloship Programs
Promote fellowship programs for foreign researchers and raise the profile of the programs - Issue Newsletters in English
Issue newsletters every three months to approx. 100 readers
